Synopsis

Daredevil (1964 series) #201 synopsis by reviewer Anthony Silvestro
Rating: 3 stars

Matt Murdock is about to meet Foggy Nelson when suddenly Matt hears someone with a gun about to kill Foggy! Foggy ducks and Matt chases after the gunman. He attempts to change to Daredevil but fumbles with his clothes. The gunman and Matt both end up running through wet cement before Matt suddenly gets very dizzy, the concussion he suffered last issue from Bullseye preventing him from catching the would-be killer. Back at their office, Foggy tells Matt he thinks it may have been one of the Binion brothers, a couple of shady contractors that he helped put out of business. Foggy’s client, an employee of theirs named Harold Carstairs, had sued them and Foggy got them shut down. That night, Matt goes as Daredevil to see if he can get some answers from Carstairs. However, when he gets there, he finds Carstairs dead and a bullet hole in the window, a clear murder!

Later, Matt’s taking his frustrations out in his home gym, accompanied by the Black Widow. Matt feels frustrated that someone’s trying to kill his best friend and he’s too weak to do anything about it. Natasha offers to do the legwork for him and bring him the Binions so he can get them to talk. Black Widow then visits a hacker named Freddie the Nerd who finds out that the Binions meet every Friday at a particular hotel for a poker game. Not only that, Freddie discovers that the Binions had a partner in their shady business, a guy by the name of Benedict Closet. Armed with this information, Natasha crashes the poker game. She beats up the rest of the guys there while the Binions run, quickly catching them outside. She ties them up and pays a cab driver to drive them around for awhile and meet her back there, no questions asked. She then crashes the fish market operated by Benedict Closet. She finds him smuggling drugs in fish and takes out his buyers while he runs. Closet gets the drop on Natasha with a net and tries to throw her in the river but she pulls him in with her. Widow gets free of the net and quickly catches Closet as he climbs onto the pier.

Natasha gets each of her prisoners dressed in their fatigues, since the shooter was dressed that way, and herds them onto a roof where Daredevil is waiting. Daredevil questions if any of them killed Carstairs or tried to kill Foggy. Closet’s heartbeat is steady but the Binion brothers’ are both erratic, even though there was only one shooter. Natasha reveals that they both have an inherited heart condition, making Daredevil’s lie detector hearing useless. He reluctantly lets them go before realizing the answer lies with one of his other enhanced senses: smell! Later, just as one of the Binions is about to snipe Foggy, Black Widow takes him out and reveals that the answer had to do with his boots. Daredevil smelled that they were brand new, as he had to buy new ones because he ruined his previous ones running through the wet cement! Matt meets up with a surprised Foggy, just happy that he’s alive.

Daredevil (1964 series) #201 Review by (October 1, 2025)

Review: Daredevil takes a back seat this issue to let Black Widow take center stage! This was an okay issue at best. Someone’s trying to kill Foggy and Matt’s too sick from a concussion he received from Bullseye last issue (only told to us now), leaving Black Widow to do all the legwork. She does get to have a couple of cool looking action scenes as the art is still quite nice (including beating up a guy that looks suspiciously like Turk but apparently isn’t). However, I found the way Daredevil solved the mystery to be a little iffy and the justification for Black Widow doing all the cool stuff felt unnecessary. He didn’t seem that injured. I also noticed that Natasha sounds just a little bit more foreign with how she talks when O’Neil writes her. I mean, she is, but usually her speaking patterns sound fairly American. Denny O'Neil also certainly likes his weird names with greats like Binion, Carstairs, and Benedict Closet! Overall, a simple and inoffensive issue that doesn’t do anything particularly spectacular either.

Comments: Josie’s is accidentally called Rosie’s in this issue.
