Synopsis

Daredevil (1964 series) #186 synopsis by Anthony Silvestro
Rating: 4.5 stars

Daredevil is spotted en route to Glenn Industries by Wilbur Day, alias Stilt-Man, who also has business there. At Glenn Industries, Heather Glenn is confronting her board of directors about the criminal activities they’ve been using her company for. Daredevil arrives and lets Heather know that there’s evidence of their misdeeds on its way to the D.A. that will put them away but leave her untouched. Just after Daredevil and Heather leave, Stilt-Man arrives to discuss the job Glenn Industries has hired him for. They’ve hired him to get rid of the evidence against them and persuade the Assistant District Attorney to drop the case. Stilt-Man asks for double if he has to deal with Daredevil too and ends up dropping his glove while he’s counting the money.

Later, Day visits Melvin Potter’s shop to get a new glove. While he’s there, he’s seemingly recognized by Turk (who at first mistakes him for Leap-Frog), who decides to follow him to find out just who he is. Meanwhile, Foggy gets back to the office to find Becky hard at work making copies of all the evidence against Glenn industries. He confronts Matt about it, reminding him that they’re defense attorneys, not prosecutors, and thinks it may have to do with Matt wanting Heather to marry him. All the while, Matt’s senses start to go haywire with Foggy’s words becoming increasingly and deafeningly loud to Matt. While Foggy notices his obvious pain, Matt’s able to drive the sound back to tolerable levels. Matt then heads out as Daredevil to deliver the evidence against Glenn Industries to the Assistant D.A.

Elsewhere, Turk follows Wilbur Day back to where he’s staying and knocks him out, stealing his Stilt-Man armor. He heads to the Kingpin’s office and offers to be his new hitman. Fisk promptly turns him down on the reasoning that he doesn’t hire idiots. Turk then decides to prove himself by completing the job that Stilt-Man was supposed to. Meanwhile, Kingpin heads down to the special private hospital he built for Vanessa where he’s been spending most of his time. Elsewhere, Wilbur Day goes to Nick Manolis’ office to report his stolen Stilt-Man armor and express the danger Turk could pose. Daredevil arrives shortly after to deliver more copies of the evidence against Glenn Industries to Manolis, and tells Day to keep talking.

Meanwhile, Foggy and Heather meet to discuss everything that’s been going on. Heather wonders if maybe Matt is working so hard to bring down her business so that he’ll be the only thing she has left, which echoes Foggy’s thoughts earlier. Across town, Turk tries capturing the Assistant D.A. and accidentally drops her, getting caught by Daredevil. Daredevil then hops on Turk’s back and reveals that the original Stilt-Man was so angry that he told Daredevil how to disable the gyroscope on his armor’s back that keeps it balanced. As a result, Turk falls with a deafening crash, which once again affects Daredevil particularly strongly. Later, Foggy arrives back at the office to find Matt briefing Heather on her company’s impending closure and her defense. She finally breaks down and agrees to marry Matt, while Foggy can only look on worriedly.

Review / Commentaries

Daredevil (1964 series) #186 Review by (June 4, 2025)

Review: Another fun issue, especially the main plot, with a number of important and intriguing side plots. The main plot involves Turk getting ahold of Stilt-Man’s armor after following him back to his hideout. Amusingly, Turk first mistakes the un-costumed Wilbur Day for Leap-Frog! This is now the second time that Turk has stolen the armor of another villain (after stealing the Mauler armor about 10 issues ago) and once again he fares no better against Daredevil. This really just proves that Turk will always be an idiot, a sentiment the Kingpin even acknowledges when Turk offers to be his new hitman! Speaking of Kingpin, we finally get a couple answers on what’s been going on with Vanessa. Though he retrieved her several issues ago, we haven’t seen her since, and this issue confirms that Fisk built a private hospital in his building just for her that she’s been in the whole time.

We also see the first hints that the radioactive materials that hit Matt last issue have affected his powers (or his hearing at least). Every now and then, everything will get exponentially louder, presented in a clever way by increasingly larger words that end up filling the page! This is now the second time Matt’s powers have gone all wonky in Miller’s run alone, even if the exact nature is different. Finally, the most important sub-plot involves Matt crusading to get Glenn Industries and its shady board of directors shut down. Foggy and Heather both wonder if Matt’s doing it knowing that without the company, he’ll be the only thing Heather has left and essentially force her to marry him. It certainly paints Matt in a questionable light, and makes what eventually happens to Heather even more grim in hindsight. Though these kinds of questionably flawed actions are often what make him such an interesting character, this begins a pattern of erratic behavior for both of them. As a result, this is the one of the first signs of increasingly deteriorating mental health that will continue off and on through the next 40 or so issues until reaching its peak during the famous Born Again storyline.

Comments: Heather debuts her new dyed blonde hair. When Wilbur Day visits Melvin Potter’s shop to get a new glove, he asks for a right glove, even though he lost his left one.
