Synopsis

Daredevil (1964 series) #205 synopsis by reviewer Anthony Silvestro
Rating: 3.5 stars

In an alley, a man is murdered by a mysterious hitman after supplying him with information, a shamrock left on his corpse. Elsewhere, Daredevil makes his way across the city when he notices an unfamiliar woman heading for Foggy’s building. He decides to eavesdrop a little and overhears a conversation between Foggy, his wife Debbie, and the mystery woman Glorianna O’Breen. Turns out, Glorianna is Debbie’s niece and she was sent to America from Ireland by her father for her own safety. Her father worked for the Irish Republican Army and was accused of being a traitor so he sent her here to get her away from danger. Glorianna works as a professional photographer and her father told her the secret of the real traitor can be found in her camera. Debbie suggests that Glorianna stay with Matt while she’s here, even referring to him as Foggy’s employee! This obviously frustrates the eavesdropping Matt, that the woman he helped his best friend marry is treating him so degradingly.

As soon as Glorianna leaves, she’s grabbed and taken away in a car by a couple of guys. Daredevil quickly stops the car and interrogates the men. They reveal that they work for the IRA as well and know her father, and were only trying to protect her from the actual traitor, a mysterious hitman codenamed “The Gael.” The IRA agent tells Daredevil where he can find him later, before DD escorts Glorianna to his apartment. As soon as Glorianna is safe, Daredevil heads out to find out what he can about the Gael. Daredevil reaches the IRA agent’s place only seconds after he’s murdered by the Gael. Daredevil tries to locate the Gael but only ends up interrupting a couple celebrating their engagement. Turns out, the Gael is only about 20 feet away in the next room over, Daredevil’s senses not detecting anything strange due to the eerie calm the Gael feels whenever he kills! Later, Matt and Glorianna discuss what to do to protect her, when Glori receives a call from a friend of her father’s, Paddy O’Hanlon. Paddy tells Glori that her father was murdered by the Gael and he’ll be bringing some of his things to her in the morning, leaving Glori sobbing in Matt’s arms.

The next morning, Matt gets to his office early to look over Glorianna’s camera. He had the photos developed to try and figure out the clue to the Gael’s identity. His hyper-senses do nothing to help him with photographs however, so he calls in Becky to have her take a look at them, but all that’s there is photos of flowers. Frustrated, he heads out as Daredevil to try and clear his head while Glorianna is visited by Paddy O’Hanlon who reveals to her that he’s the Gael! He ties Glori up and tortures her, savoring the feeling as he’s getting ready to kill her. Daredevil suddenly comes to a realization and heads back to his office. He discovers the answer to the Gael’s identity was literally in the camera, the name Paddy O’Hanlon scratched into the metal inside! Armed with this knowledge, Daredevil races back to his apartment where he finds the Gael with his hand around Glorianna’s neck! Forced to play by his rules, the Gael has Daredevil cuff his hands behind his back before attacking him! Even with this disadvantage, Daredevil is able to overcome the Gael and free Glorianna. Deeply affected by the whole ordeal, Glorianna isn’t sure if she can ever forgive Paddy.

Daredevil (1964 series) #205 Review by (October 29, 2025)

Review: Daredevil gains a new supporting character with the debut of Glorianna O’Breen, who’s being targeted by a hitman! This was a pretty simple issue overall but I think that worked in its favor. I certainly liked it more than the last few issues. Glorianna will go on to be somewhat of a romantic interest for Matt, for a brief time anyway. The Gael isn’t a particularly notable villain; I mean, Daredevil literally beats him with his hands tied behind his back! Though he does have a certain creepy factor, receiving a sense of calm serenity from killing, which prevents Daredevil from finding him at one point in an apartment building, as his heartbeat wouldn’t stand out from anyone else’s. The moment feels odd at first but makes more sense with some thought. There’s a bit of “as you know” type dialogue when Glorianna is introduced, with the characters awkwardly stating things they already know for the audience’s benefit, though it’s not too distracting. I also found the way that Daredevil figured out the Gael’s identity to be pretty clever. A pretty good issue all around.

Comments: First appearance of Glorianna O’Breen. First appearance of the Gael. In one panel, Debbie is accidentally called Debbie Whitman instead of either Debbie Nelson, her married name, or Debbie Harris, her maiden name. Likely got mixed up with the Spider-Man character Deb Whitman.
