Story #2

The Goblin cometh

Writer: Brian Michael Bendis.Penciler: Neal Adams. Inker: Tom Palmer. Colorist: Paul Mounts. Letterer: Joe Caramagna.

Synopsis

By Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars
Some sort of brain spasm made me forget I'd written this and attribute it to Peter!

Norman Osborn is a prisoner in the Raft after he fell from high office as the Siege event ended his Dark Reign. But in his mind he's being harangued by his alter-ego Green Goblin, saying that the world is waiting for him to fulfil his promise to save them and his HAMMER organisation is waiting for him to lead them again.

In Avengers Mansion the New Avengers are having lunch and the banter currently surrounds the smell of the diapers of Luke Cage and Jessica Jones' baby Danielle. But Victoria Hand, their liaison with Captain America, wants to talk to them about Osborn, which causes Spider-Man to switch banter target to her past relationship with the man. Ignoring that she tells them that he's being transferred from then Raft for trial at the International Criminal Court in the Hague. But there are worries about rumours of HAMMER still being active. Spidey blows up at the word 'rumours' because they recently (#9-13 before Fear Itself) fought HAMMER and Mockingbird nearly died. Ignoring him again she says that the team has been asked to handle the transfer. Bobbi Morse asks if what they really want is for Wolverine to kill him, but unfortunately the answer's no.

Later at the Raft Cage and Thing are escorting Osborn to a quinjet while Ms Marvel flies overhead and armed guards keep watch. MB is ready to pilot the craft but she detects something as a gigantic aircraft appears and grabs the quinjet and superfolk in a large force bubble. And the armed guards turn out to be HAMMER supporters. Inside the bubble the heroes are being thrown around while 1 of the jet-packed guards fires into it and extracts Norman with force tentacles. The guards greet him as they all escape in the bigger plane. He asks where they're taking him and they say *he* was supposed to tell them the rendezvous point. So Osborn casts a spell which reveals that he's really Dr Strange. And another spell brings the craft crashing to the ground.

So now it's time for the real transfer. Jessica, Iron Fist, Wolverine and some more guards escort Osborn from his cell. Norman taunts Jess by telling her he's going to kill her baby, which prompts Logan to stick an adamantium claw in his mouth. But Osborn says "The word is given" and these guards also turn out to be working for him. They splatter Wolvie with gunfire giving them a brief time while his healing factor does its job. IF and superstrong Jones attack the guards and then Jessica grabs Osborn. But his restraints fall off and he grabs *her* and throws her at Danny Rand. He and the guards exit through a large doorway which slams shut behind them. Fist contacts the other Avengers while Logan recovers and Jessica hits an alarm button.

Osborn and his 'guards' run through the prison to release Deidre Wentworth (Superia, the HAMMER leader who was captured at the end of #13). Rand tries to smash through the big door with his Iron Fist power but it repels him, just as Cage, Dr Strange, Mockingbird, Spidey and Thing join them. Jess contacts Carol Danvers to tell her to watch for Osborn escaping in the other direction. She flies around but can't see anything so she dives down to enter the prison via an underwater entrance. She finds a large door with loud noises on the other side. But its only the heroes breaking through and Osborn is nowhere to be seen. Wolverine threatening a complicit guard doesn't help because he just spouts cult cant.

Osborn has been flown to a large stadium somewhere filled with rapturous supporters. He greets the crowd accompanied by Superia (back in her 'costume' from #13) and Madame Hydra (Ophelia Sarkissian) with an 'octopus' on her head. Some AIM scientists are seen in the assembly.

Review / Commentaries

New Avengers (2010 series) #16 Review by (August 2, 2025)

Review: “This man has sacrificed everything to try to make this city safer.” Thus sayeth Luke Cage and he is right. Daredevil started out as a cheerful Spider-Man imitation (almost said clone, which is a bad word to use around Spider-Man) but later writers, especially Frank Miller and Peter David would make him the darkest and grimmest of heroes, with a record number of dying love interests (no refrigerators, thankfully). It’s nice to see this semi-popular hero get some appreciation and this issue is ideal. They ask what makes a person worthy to be an Avenger and answer it with Daredevil. There are also some spectacular two-page action sequences and for once, the oral history gimmick actually works, Cage and Jessica Jones and Squirrel Girl giving their input on DD. A clever touch was to show a succession of heroes all dissing the next guy in line, only to have them turn around and praise that person for overcoming their limitations to be an Avengers. And now DD is one of them. Yeah, I know a hero doesn’t have to be an Avenger to be cool and heroic—look how long Spider-Man was a loner before he was recruited.

Comments: FEAR ITSELF tie-in: story takes place during Sin’s siege of Manhattan in FEAR ITSELF #4 and simultaneously with AVENGERS (2010) #14. Cameos by Spider-Man, Wolverine, Protector, Dr. Strange, Iron Man, Spider-Woman. Issue includes reprinted material from 2001 commemorating the tenth anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. And note: Ms. Marvel and Iron Fist appear on the cover but are not in the story.

Comments on 2nd story by RobFJ.

The 2nd story here is actually #16.1. It's 1 of the Point 1 issues meant as a jumping on point for new readers and leading in to the next story arc in the title.

The cover for that issue was by Neal Adams & Paul Mounts.

Ophelia Sarkassian was last seen in the Secret Warriors series. She got the octopus head when she was resurrected by Hydra in their #15 after being killed by Madame Hydra (Val de Fontaine) in the previous issue. It was then that she dropped her Viper codename and reclaimed the role of Madame Hydra.

1 of Osborn & co's 1st actions will be to welcome Carolina Washington and her collection of superhero DNA in the closing scene of Avengers (2010) #18.

The New Avengers have  been involved in a lot of stuff since #16 itself which was part of the Fear Itself event. Primarily:-
FI: The Fearless limited series.
Av: Children's Crusade limited series.
The New Avengers and Avengers Annuals featuring Wonder Man's Revengers.
The Spider-Island event.
The 2011 Moon Knight series.
The Annihilators: Earthfall mini-series.
(Plus of course various apps by individual members, mainly Spider-Man, Thing and Wolverine.)

The Av: X-Sanction mini-series occurs between #16.1 and #17 as does Av(2010)#19 where Captain America announces the new lineup of the Avengers. The New Avengers lineup remains the same but Spidey and Logan are no longer also on the 'main' team. And at the end of the issue freed Norman Osborn declares that he was illegally removed from control of the Avengers (at the end of Dark Reign/Siege) and held without trial.

But Thing won't be around for next issue, or until #23. Not that he's actually doing anything else according to the Marvel Chronology Project.
