At the hidden headquarters of Suprema, mysterious mistress of menace, the lady mastermind tells her assembled gang that the time has come to strike. When a minion questions her plans to become Queen of Crime, she silences him with a karate chop to the head and continues. She reveals her plans to seize control of all criminal rackets within 24 hours by using the power of witchcraft! She begins by heading for the Long Island club of Aces Wilde in her Wolverine Jet; there, by her mysterious powers, she persuades Wilde to sign over control of his casino to her. For the rest of the day, Suprema and her gang move from one crook to another, taking over their operations solely through the beauteous witch’s influence….

Meanwhile at SHIELD HQ Captain America gives a judo demonstration to trainees using Nick Fury as a stooge, then goes back to brooding over Sharon Carter, blissfully unaware of what is about to take place….

Suprema, using the sensitive electro-scanner in her Wolverine Jet, is on the lookout for a SHIELD agent; she finds Dum-Dum Dugan by tracking his special mini-badge. She captures Dugan’s mind and persuades him to lead her and her men to SHIELD’s weaponry range just outside the city. There she announces that she is the new Director of SHIELD, bringing Nick Fury and the assembled agents under her spell. Cap is the only one unaffected and he barely manages to fight his way past the enemy gang to safety, hijacking their vehicle. Stopping off at the Daily Bugle and Stark Industries to do some research, Cap finds the means of defeating his foes. Back at SHIELD HQ, Fury and his men suddenly snap out of the spell and quickly overpower Suprema’s gang. Knowing that Suprema and her partner Scarbo were former sideshow hypnotists, Cap had generated an electrical signal to short-circuit the device which amplified her powers. The defeated villainess offers to make Cap her partner, promising him power…but Cap will have none of it and he walks away….

Captain America (1968 series) #123 Review by (April 1, 2026)

Review: So a new baddie arrives, Suprema, who sounds at first like a feminist villainess, but no, that’s Superia, which would have caused some confusion a couple decades later so they gave Suprema a new name. Wait, maybe Suprema is Diana Ross’ superhero identity…anyway, she’s a classy mind control type of bad guy, with almost Purple Man levels of success. Gene Colan makes her sexy and sinister in a nice combination. All Cap has to do in the end is interfere with her technology. And there’s a rejoinder to those who think superheroes are just tough guys who bash their opponents’ heads, especially Captain America: Cap does historical and scientific research to identify them, figure out how their abilities work and devise a means of rendering it inoperative to snap the hypnotized good guys out of it, after which the mopping up is easy. Cap is a smart guy.

One neat little bit: A passerby looks into the barber shop that is the secret entrance to SHIELD HQ thinking, “I’d sure hate to own that joint, Hardly ever see a single customer in there.”

Comments: First appearance of Suprema, later known as Mother Night, and Scarbo, later Minister Blood. They return in CAP #356-357, in their new identities nearly twenty years later. She shows up quite often on Red Skull’s team in that era while Scarbo barely makes a blip with only a few apps afterward. It is never explained why Cap is immune to Suprema’s power. Suprema’s Wolverine Jet is actually a rocket-powered truck (and has no connection to the X-Men). Cameos by Jasper Sitwell, Tony Stark, and J. Jonah Jameson.
