Captain America (1968 series) #115

The Red Skull has recovered the Cosmic Cube and now controls the fate of the world. He changes the stunned Steve Rogers into his Captain America gear and demands that the hero pay homage to him. Cap instead leaps up and punches the Skull, only to find the figure before him is an illusion. The real Skull knocks Cap down with a power blast from the Cube and gloats over his defeated foe, pausing to explain how he regained the Cosmic Cube: after it was lost in the ocean, a volcanic eruption cast it up on the shore of a Mediterranean island where it was found by a fisherman, who accidentally discovered its powers and used it to make his village prosper. When reports of this miraculous occurrence reached the Red Skull, he and his Exiles went to the island and seized it from the hapless fisherman. When the Exiles demanded a share of the power and wealth that would come from the Cosmic Cube, the Red Skull used the Cube to exert his superiority over his minions, and now he has his arch-enemy Captain America in his power…

Elsewhere, Rick Jones is concerned about Cap’s disappearance; he approaches Sharon Carter but she’s busy and Yellowjacket is unconcerned, so he contacts the Teen Brigade to put the word out to contact the Avengers with any news of the missing hero. Meanwhile, the Red Skull is using his powers to torment Captain America: he sends his foe to a dark dimension where he is beset by reptilian horrors, then drops him for miles before launching him into space for an encounter with a tentacled alien. As Cap struggles with his sanity, the Skull shrinks him and imprisons him in a bottle, then dumps him on the floor. The miniature Cap fights back however, but the Red Skull is struck with a hideous inspiration for revenge. He summons Sharon to the room, and then while she is in a trance, the Skull switches bodies with Cap so that when Sharon awakens, she believes “Cap” has saved her from the “Red Skull.” When the man with the villain’s face insists he is really Captain America, Sharon believes the Red Skull has gone mad and clings to her beloved for protection.
