Steve Rogers walks the streets of New York, his mind in a turmoil. Though his loved ones are now safe from danger because his identity is a secret once again, he doesn’t know who Steve Rogers is any more: his entire adult life has been lived as Captain America; he has never had a life or home of his own. As he approaches Avengers headquarters, he decides to make a break with the past, to start a new life for himself, so he turns and walks away. The Avengers spot him from a window and decide to respect his wishes….

Steve decides to visit SHIELD HQ to see Sharon Carter and changes into his Captain America outfit before entering through the barbershop. As he enters, Nick Fury is reviewing a videotaped report from Sharon: she has located an entire cell of A.I.M. leaders and, rather than wait for reinforcements, she is going to try to apprehend them herself. Sharon blasts through the villains’ wall and opens up with her weaponry, but the head man calls for the Walking Stiletto, a huge robot with spiked arms and a death ray. In the nick of time, Cap arrives with Rick to fight off the monster, and the three heroes working together manage to destroy it. As SHIELD arrives, Cap asks Sharon to resign from the service but she can’t, the service is her life. Dejected, Cap leaves….

Later, Steve uses makeup to change his features and darken his hair and sets out to find a hotel room. It turns out to be a more difficult task than he had figured, since a man without ID or luggage looks suspicious. Eventually he winds up in a seedy side-street hotel, where he ponders his future. Suddenly a strange disorienting sensation strikes him and materializing before him is the Red Skull…once more in possession of the Cosmic Cube.

Note: The Avengers appearing are The Vision, the Black Panther, Goliath (Clint Barton), Wasp, Yellowjacket.

Captain America (1968 series) #114 Review by (December 31, 2025)

Review: Cap now has a secret identity again so his loved ones are safe—though his loved ones are Sharon Carter, a SHIELD agent, and Rick Jones, the new Bucky, so it seems like they should be able to take care of themselves. And then we have a depressed Sharon kicking AIM butt and proving it. So how does Cap respond? By asking her to quit since a secret identity is totally irrelevant to her wellbeing. So then he tries to establish a new identity—having put absolutely no thought into the matter, just donning some makeup and trying to book a room. And Cap is supposed to be a master tactician; well, he should have looked to SHIELD which certainly knows how to create a new identity for someone. And then everything becomes moot as the Red Skull locates him with the Cosmic Cube, rendering the last several issues senseless.

Comments: Part one of a six-part story. The Walking Stiletto returns in WOLVERINE (1988) #149 and IRON MAN 2020 (2020) #1, which is a very spread out set of appearances.
