Synopsis

Daredevil (1964 series) #198 synopsis by reviewer Anthony Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

In Japan, Daredevil sneaks into his own hotel room in order to procure a change of clothes. He meets up again with Yuriko and the two leave for the train station, all the while being watched. At the train station, Yuriko goes to get their tickets, while Matt puts in a call to Ben Urich in New York. Ben gives Matt all the information he could find on Lord Dark Wind, including his true identity of Kenji Oyama, disgraced former kamikaze pilot. Urich tells Matt that Oyama finances a lot of reactionary political activity and isn’t above using local yakuza to have people killed, warning Matt to stay away from him. The warning proves warranted as the call is interrupted when Matt is forced to defend himself against one of his pursuers. Matt takes out his attacker while an unaware Ben tells him that Oyama also apparently has the tendency of scarring his children’s faces…

Matt then dodges a shot from another attacker who ends up escaping. Matt and Yuriko board the train and during the ride, Matt experiences another strange headache like he had last issue. We then see that Bullseye is experiencing the same thing, and it lets him know that Daredevil is in Japan! Lord Dark Wind claims that the hatred shared between the two has mentally linked them to each other! Meanwhile, Matt is attacked once more when the train makes a scheduled maintenance stop, and Matt realizes that the shooter must have snuck on the train with them! Matt pursues the shooter and stylishly takes him down but realizes that he can’t even interrogate him as neither knows the other’s language. Back aboard the train, Matt asks Yuriko what her stake in all this is. She tells him that Lord Dark Wind has recruited the man she loves, Kira, to serve in his private army and she wishes to stop him from going down this dark path, even hoping that Daredevil kills Dark Wind if need be!

Back in New York, Foggy wonders about how Matt is doing in Japan, and his wife Debbie angrily tells him to go to sleep. Meanwhile, after exiting the train, Matt and Yuriko buy a boat to travel the last bit to Dark Wind’s island. On the island, Bullseye can feel Daredevil coming and Dark Wind dispatches three samurai to deal with him once he arrives. Matt and Yuriko reach the island and Matt changes to Daredevil, just in time to encounter the three samurai. Daredevil faces down the three warriors in a stylish, wordless sequence before emerging victorious! He wonders if Yuriko will use the opportunity to kill him, having made the connection he heard from Ben that Yuriko is Dark Wind’s daughter! However, Yuriko claims she’s been telling the truth the whole time and Daredevil knows she means it. She prompts him to kill the three fallen warriors but he refuses and the two find shelter to wait out the snowy night. To be continued!

Daredevil (1964 series) #198 Review by (September 10, 2025)

Review: A nice continuation of the previous issue as Matt and Yuriko make their way to Dark Wind’s island, naturally encountering some trouble along the way! I’m digging the new art by William Johnson, it feels pretty Miller-esque, especially during the action scenes. There’s a particular action scene towards the end where Daredevil takes on three samurai in a completely wordless sequence (aside from a brief haiku to set the mood) that feels especially evocative of Miller. It’s rather nice to look at and is absolutely the highlight of the issue. This issue also establishes a strange mental connection between Daredevil and Bullseye attributed to pure hatred that lets Bullseye sense when Daredevil is coming. It’s kind of a dumb development in my opinion and other writers must have thought so too, as it’s never really brought up again after this storyline. There’s also an odd little scene played for comedy in which Foggy fantasizes about all the fun Matt is having in Japan with geisha girls, earning him a dirty look from his wife. It’s completely random and doesn’t really fit in with the rest of the issue. Overall, a pretty solid continuation to Daredevil’s Japan adventure!

Comments: First issue fully drawn by new artist William Johnson, joined here by Danny Bulanadi. This issue confirms that Yuriko is Lord Dark Wind’s daughter.
